Duke -Transitioning academic technology from experimentation to institutional support
This was an excellent session. some nice info about the ipod project and the Duke Digital Initiative, but also some overarching phased planning approaches including thinking around first phase innovation, second phase... sound familiar anyone?
Spring 04 - suppose we made iPods available? asked staff and students what academic uses could be layered onto their est. use as music players?
And what if we add microphones?
Spring 05 - quick adoption drove demand Go-unanticipated insure around producing acquiring string and using digital content miss biggest influence of use
05/06 - Courses not classes curricular goals, infrastructure, extend time frame
iPods used by between 86 and 120.. courses depending on how measured, but basically one third of undergraduate population are using iPods as an integral part of their course.
Duke Digital Initiative 06/07
Phase 1 – experiment, pilot and introduction
Video on portable devices, Ways of acquiring media content, 3D visualization, Web collaboration
Phase 2 – extension and transition
Digital capture and dissem of lectures, Tablet pcs, Podcasting service
Phase 3 – standard support and integration
iPods mainstream, General use of digital audio/images, Media in Bb, iTunesU
New technologies – Lectopia, iTunesU, Podcasting
New services – DukeCapture, DukeStream, DukeCast (can you see what they have done there….)
Shift from special projects to phased support for innovation – transitioning to evaluation focus.
Phase 1 – experiment, pilot and introduction
Document innovative tech uses, Detecting unanticipated outcomes, Measuring short-term impact
Phase 2 – extension and transition
Identify and document stable use patterns, Defining use cases for institutional support
Phase 3 – standard support and integration
Confirm sustainability of support models, Measuring long term impact
Adapting project support to innovative cycle
Small number of “special flower” projects > course support provided
Selection process > based on standard use cases
University equipment subsidy > indiv and program ownership
Technology-centred > functionality centred
Customized support arrangements > standard support models built on existing IT support structure
Heroic efforts, special projects > embedded in job descriptions/co-management
What’s next for phase 1?
faculty roundtables on new and emerging technologies
student driven experimentation with technologies
